Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
