Finest TV Selections: 7 Must-Watch Films This Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance and the feared consequences of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers a masterful performance as Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into hosting an aerobics show on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and horrifying procedure known as "The Substance". This creates a new version of herself called Sue, resulting in a progressively vampiric relationship between the two. This Friday, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit thriller features the talented actress playing Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take some time off from covering world issues to embark on a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her partner, plus additional affluent passengers. Yet once an enigmatic female falls into the sea one night and the entire crew claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries in this innovative supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the filming device – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the poltergeist, and the entity appears guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Cage embraces his cult stardom in this meta comedy caper. He acts as an egotistical celebrity called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to appear at a birthday party on the Spanish island for the wealthy superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unconventional method is put to the test. October 11th, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has made the local kids anxious. After Finney is kidnapped by the villain and locked up in a cellar, he anticipates a terrible outcome. However, the disconnected phone in the room repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. This Saturday, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in this director's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, though the lead actress succeeds to present Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

This week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh delivers a intelligence thriller as sharp as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's British agent. His assignment is to discover a traitor among the team from five suspects – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, so a delicious mind game of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
