Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
